QR codes vs. television-based ordering

The strongest case for TV ordering is not that it beats every menu format. It is that a large screen keeps digital-menu advantages while avoiding the biggest QR-code frustrations.

First, a caveat worth knowing: there is not a large body of independent research that directly tests TV-based ordering, QR menus, and paper menus head-to-head. Most of the available evidence is either vendor material, industry reporting, or research about the weaknesses of QR menus and the operational tradeoffs of paper.

That means the honest argument for a large-screen or TV-based ordering system is not "TV wins every time." It is more defensible than that: TV-based ordering keeps the operational upside of digital menus while avoiding several of the problems that make QR menus frustrating for guests.

Where QR codes struggle

Peer-reviewed hospitality research has found that QR code menus can reduce customer loyalty compared with traditional menus, largely because guests perceive them as inconvenient. The effect is stronger for diners who value human interaction.

Industry reporting points in the same direction. PYMNTS covered restaurants bringing back paper menus after guest complaints, including reports of privacy concerns, older diners struggling with the scan flow, and one restaurant group seeing check averages fall by 10% because diners did not scroll through all the offerings. The same coverage cited PYMNTS Intelligence data that only 31% of consumers felt positively about viewing menus through QR codes.

The pattern is easy to understand. A phone menu starts with friction: find the phone, unlock it, scan the code, wait for the page, hope the connection works, then read a long menu on a small screen. If the menu is a PDF or a poorly designed mobile page, guests end up pinching, zooming, scrolling, and switching sections instead of browsing comfortably.

That friction is not evenly distributed. QR menus are harder for guests with low battery, weak mobile data, no smartphone, accessibility needs, or less confidence with scanning codes. In a hospitality setting, that matters because the guests most likely to need help are often the ones QR-only ordering leaves behind.

What the TV format changes

A television-based ordering surface removes the customer's phone from the start of the journey. There is no scanning step, no app install, no dependence on guest Wi-Fi, and no need to read a complete menu through a narrow phone viewport. The restaurant, hotel, or serviced apartment controls the hardware, connection, layout, and content quality.

The large screen also changes merchandising. High-margin dishes, specials, pairings, chef recommendations, room-service bundles, and add-ons can be shown visually instead of buried below the fold. That directly addresses the check-average problem reported with QR menus: if people stop scrolling on a phone, they never see the things the business most wants them to discover.

Visual richness is a real lever, though vendor claims should be treated carefully. One video-menu vendor says high-quality video presentation helped increase customer spending by 15%. Even if a restaurant treats that as directional rather than universal, the underlying point is sound: food is easier to sell when guests can see it clearly.

Versus paper menus

Paper still has a real advantage: people understand it. Guests can browse without technology, share the menu around the table, and ask a server questions naturally. That comfort should not be dismissed.

But paper loses on operations. Printed menus are expensive to update, slow to change, and resource-heavy. They cannot instantly reflect sold-out items, daily specials, price changes, timing changes, or personalized offers. They also cannot show motion, rich photography, dynamic upsells, or real-time availability.

Digital systems solve those operational problems. QR codes solve them cheaply, but move the burden onto the guest's phone. A TV-based system solves them while keeping the browsing experience visible, shared, and easier to read.

The honest weak spots

TV ordering has its own tradeoffs. QR codes are cheap because they need almost no hardware. Screens cost money, need mounting, need cleaning, and can break. A shared touchscreen can also weaken the hygiene argument that made QR menus popular in the first place, unless the TV is controlled by remote, staff device, or phone handoff.

Payment also needs a thoughtful design. QR ordering is strong at pay-at-the-table, stored payment, and tab closing. A TV ordering flow should either hand payment to the guest's phone, integrate with the POS, or send the order to staff for confirmation.

Fit matters too. Table-screen ordering is more natural in Korean BBQ, hotpot, buffet, family dining, food courts, hotels, and in-room dining. It is a harder sell in fine dining, where human service is part of the product.

The best framing

The winning argument is not that television-based ordering replaces every menu. It is that a large-screen system captures the best parts of going digital: instant updates, lower printing dependency, better visuals, stronger upselling, and cleaner service discovery.

At the same time, it sidesteps the QR menu failures that guests complain about most: tiny-screen browsing, phone dependency, battery and connectivity friction, accessibility gaps, and the tendency to miss items that sit below the fold.

For hotels and in-room dining especially, that is the practical opportunity. Let the TV make services visible. Let the phone handle private actions. Let staff stay available for the moments where hospitality actually needs a person.
